1. The two centuries of the philosophes were the late 17th and 18th centuries.

 

2.The philosophes hoped to accomplish that they might discover new ways to understand and imporve their society. 

 

3. The two tools or skills the philosophes belieived were necessary to find out the truth of things are natural laws and the confidence in people's ability to use reason to discover the truth.   

 

4. Another name for the enlightenment period is the age of reason. 

 

5. The way Isaac Newton inspired the philosophes was because they believed what Newton learned about the planets they could also find in people.

      philosophe: philosophes were people that applied reason to study many different things.  

 

      natural law: truths that people do not always recongnize 

 

      universal: the idea that natural laws could be found anywhere, they just had to be        discovered.
